About Us

Compassionate Care in the Heart of Africa

The Kumi Hospital was founded in 1929 by Dr. Wiggins of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) as a leprosy colony/leprosy center to provide medical and psychosocial support to people affected by leprosy.
In 1995, the Kumi Leprosy Centre (KLC) was registered as an NGO FBO, PNFP (Private Not For Profit Organization).
In 1998, a proposal was made to transform the hospital into a general hospital, and a resolution was adopted by the Board of Directors to change the institution's name from KLC to Kumi Hospital Ongino due to the declining prevalence of leprosy.
In 2009, it was officially transformed into a general hospital and has since functioned as a general hospital providing medical care, maternal and child care, surgical services in the fields of orthopedics, general surgery, ophthalmology, and emergency obstetric care. For over 97 years, we have been a comprehensive community care facility with 300 beds, and today with 160 dedicated employees.
Kumi Hospital is located in Eastern Uganda 260 Km from Kampala the Capital City. It is Located in the Plains of Teso in the savanna Belt.
